February 17, 2011 – Derrick Rose named MVP

For the first time since Michael Jordan, the Bulls had the MVP of the NBA.

At 22 years, 7 months, Derrick Rose became the youngest MVP in the history of the league when he one the award following the 2010-11 season. NBA commissioner David Stern presented Rose with the award prior to Game 2 of the Eastern Conference semifinal series against the Hawks at the United Center.

Rose became the first MVP winner since Dave Cowens in 1973 to win the award without receiving one vote the previous year.

The point guard in his third season in the NBA averaged 25 points, 7.7 assists and 4.1 rebounds per game, joining Oscar Robertson, Jerry West, Larry Bird, Michael Jordan, Dwyane Wade and LeBron James as the only players to post averages of at least 25 points, 7.5 assists and four rebounds in a single season.

Rose also became the fifth player — and first point guard — to post 2,000 points, 600 assists and 300 rebounds in the same season.

With Rose at the helm, the Bulls posted an NBA-best 62-20 record and reached the Eastern Conference Finals, ultimately losing to the Heat in five games.
