Woman Killed, Man Seriously Hurt In NW Side Fire

CHICAGO (STMW) -- A woman was killed and her relative seriously injured in a fire in a Northwest Side apartment fire early Sunday.

Paula Snyder, 68, was killed in the fire in her apartment in the 5000 block of West Altgeld Street, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.

Firefighters responded at 3:17 a.m. and found flames in the second floor of the building, Fire Media Affairs Chief Joe Roccasalva said.

The woman was found lying on a couch with extensive burns, a source said.

Emergency crews took a man who lived in a downstairs unit -- apparently the woman's relative -- to Our Lady of the Resurrection Medical Center in "serious but stable" condition, Roccasalva said.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
