(CBS) The White Sox officially signed infielder Orlando Hudson to a one-year deal Tuesday and placed third baseman Brent Morel on the 15-day disabled list.
Morel was diagnosed with a lumbar back strain. He has been battling the issue on-and-off since spring training. The move is retroactive to May 18.
Hudson, 34, was released by the San Diego Padres on May 17. He hit .211 with five triples, one home run, 11 RBI and three stolen bases in 35 games before being released.
Hudson, who has never played any defensive position besides second base in the majors, has a career batting average of .276 with 63 triples, 91 home runs, 525 RBI, 638 runs scored and 82 stolen bases. He is a two-time All-Star and four-time Gold Glove winner.
The infielder will wear uniform No. 5 for the White Sox.
