High School Freshman Killed By Train In NW Indiana

CEDAR LAKE, Ind. (CBS) -- A 15-year-old girl, who was apparently walking while listening to her headphones, was struck and killed by a train in northwest Indiana on Wednesday.

Chloe Burks, a freshman at Hanover Central High School, was struck at the Norfolk Southern Railway tracks near 133rd Avenue in Cedar Lake around 3:40 p.m.

CBS 2's Pamela Jones reports, according to police, Burks was walking south along the tracks near a storage facility, when a train came up behind her. Because she was apparently listening to her headphones, she might not have heard the train coming.

Authorities said it did not appear to be a suicide.

Police shut down 133rd Avenue to traffic for several hours after the accident.

The Lake County Sheriff's Department was investigating to determine exactly what happened.

Community leaders and counselors will be at the school on Thursday to help students cope with Chloe's death.
