New Trier: Lunch Vendor's Food Was Too Healthy

WINNETKA, Ill. (CBS) -- A major Chicago area school lunch vendor had to recently reduce the amount of healthy food choices at New Trier Township High School because, they weren't going over very well.

As WBBM Newsradio's Bernie Tafoya reports, administrators at the prestigious school reportedly thought their lunch provider, Aramark, had gone over the top in the healthy department, according to the Chicago Tribune.

The school threatened to yank the company's contract if it didn't provide items that teenagers would actually eat.

The newspaper reports Aramark took to heart the wellness policy at New Trier, which required having 75 percent of food items meet national nutrition standards. Thus, out went the fried foods and monosodium glutamate, and in came breads pastas and tortillas made only with whole wheat.

The students rebelled against the changes, to the point where parents started complain about having to pack their lunches, the Tribune reported.

Now, Aramark is using different cooks and menu items, and the New Trier school board re-signed the company this week to another year, the Tribune reported.
