CHICAGO (CBS) – A father and son from northwest suburban Norridge were both badly injured when they lost control of their motorcycles on Lake Shore Drive in the Edgewater area Saturday afternoon. Both the 52-year-old father and his 25-year-old son have also been cited for DUI, police said.
The crash occurred about 3:43 p.m. at approximately 5600 – 5700 North Lake Shore Drive, where the Drive meets West Hollywood Avenue.
The two were headed northbound on their motorcycles — the father on a 2003 blue Harley Davidson and the son on a 1978 green Suzuki — when the older motorcyclist, who was in the sceond lane over from the east curblane, near the jogging path, for some unknown reason lost control of the bike, police News Affairs Officer John Mirabelli said.
He flew off the motorcycle, which continued traveling northbound for about a block and a-half, until it struck a taxicab that was stopped at a red light at Sheridan and Hollywood, Mirabelli said. The motorcycle rider continued north along Lake Shore Drive, suffering various head and back injuries and abrasions.
About the same time, the man’s son, also traveling northbound on Lake Shore Drive, lost control of his motorcycle and struck a concrete wall, Mirabelli said. The younger motorcyclist was projected over the concrete wall, and landed on the grass adjacent to the running path. He suffered substantial injuries to his right leg.
Paramedics took the two men to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center in critical condition, Fire Media Affairs said.
The 52-year-old was cited with DUI, and his son was cited with DUI, as well as DUI with a blood alcohol level of over .08, Mirabelli said. All three counts are misdemeanors. Both men, who are from Norridge, are scheduled to appear for a hearing in traffic court at 9 a.m. on June 26.
