At Least 3 Dead, 14 Wounded In Weekend Shootings

Updated 6/9/12 at 2:09 p.m.

CHICAGO (STMW) - Three people have died and at least 14 have been wounded in shootings since Friday afternoon in Chicago.

The first shooting happened about 4:43 p.m. in the 5100 block of South May Street when two men were killed and three others were wounded.

The five were standing outside when two unknown males approached them on foot and fired shots, police said in a statement.

Rashuan Stephany, 22, of the 1300 block of West 49th Street and Mario Jackson, 26, of the 5100 block of South Morgan Street, died a short time later at John H. Stroger Hospital of Cook County, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.

An 18-year-old man shot in the buttocks and a 24-year-old man shot in the hand were also taken to Stroger, police said, adding that both men were in "stable" condition.

Police said someone drove a fifth victim -- a 39-year-old man -- to Provident Hospital of Cook County, where he was listed in good condition with a gunshot wound to the arm.

The second fatal shooting happened about 12:49 a.m. Saturday during an apparent robbery attempt, according to police.

Kenneth J. Jones, 27, of the 3800 block of South Cottage Grove Avenue, was found dead of a gunshot wound to the head in the 6800 block of South Indiana Avenue, officials said.

At least six other people, -- mostly men -- were wounded in shootings on the South and West sides late Friday and early Saturday. None of them suffered life-threatening injuries.

One woman, 36, suffered a graze wound in the leg when she tried to intervene in a fight between her boyfriend and three other males about 12:22 a.m. in the 3600 block of West Division Street.

She was listed in good condition early Saturday at Saints Mary and Elizabth Medical Center.

Later Saturday morning, five men were wounded in two shootings about an hour apart on the South and Far South Sides.

Two men were critically wounded in a shooting in the Far South Side Roseland neighborhood Saturday morning.

About 10:23 a.m. two men were shot at 111th Street and South Edbrooke Avenue, according to police News Affairs Officer Laura Kubiak.

One male victim was shot in the chest and the other suffered gunshot wounds to both arms, Kubiak said.

Both were taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, according to Fire Media Affairs Director Larry Langford. Both were in serious to critical condition, but the man shot in the chest was in "extremely critical condition," as of late Saturday morning, Langford said.

About 11:24 a.m., three men were critically wounded in a shooting in the West Englewood neighborhood.

The shooting happened at West 74th Street and South Ashland Avenue, Kubiak said. Police initially were notified that two men were shot at that location, but then discovered a third victim from that shooting. All three victims were shot in the chest, Kubiak said.

The two victims were taken, both in critical condition, to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County, Langford said. The third victim, also in critical condition, was taken to Christ Medical Center, according to Kubiak.
