2 Killed, 5 Shot -- Including Pregnant Woman -- In Overnight Gun Violence

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Two men were killed and five people were wounded – including a 17-year-old pregnant girl – in a rash of shootings late Monday and early Tuesday.

The Marquette Park neighborhood on the Southwest Side was hit particularly hard, with two shootings and a third incident in which a man was injured as he ran from gunfire.

Around 9:11 p.m., the pregnant girl was inside a house in the 1700 block of South Maplewood Avenue in Marquette Park, when she was hit in the sho9ulder by gunfire, police said.

She was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn in serious condition, police said. The unborn child was uninjured.

About seven blocks to the north, a man was shot and killed around 11 p.m. Gunfire took the life of Davonte Slennoy in the alley behind the 6300 block of South Rockwell Street where he lived, police said.

Just a block away at 12:20 a.m., a man was injured as he ran from gunfire. The man thought he had been shot as he ran from the 6400 block of South Rockwell Street, but an emergency room doctor at Holy Cross Hospital found that he had only suffered a minor wound to his foot.

Meanwhile, another man was found dead with multiple gunshot wounds in the desolate area where the Robert Taylor Homes once stood. The body of the man, who was in his 30s, was found around 3 a.m. in the 3900 block of South Federal Street, police said.

In another incident, a man was critically wounded by gunfire in the Humboldt Park neighborhood. The 26-year-old victim was taken in critical condition to Stroger Hospital of Cook County after being shot in the 900 block of North Avers Avenue, police said.

A man was also shot around 8 p.m. in the 8800 block of South Michigan Avenue, in the West Chesterfield neighborhood. A 33-year-old man was shot multiple times in the leg, and was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he was reported in stable condition.

Another man was shot around 10:37 p.m. in the 8800 block of South Burley Avenue, in the South Chicago neighborhood. The 23-year-old victim was taken to Advocate Trinity Hospital in good condition after being shot in the leg.

In an additional incident at 10:52 p.m., a man was shot in the buttocks in the 6600 block of South Blackstone Avenue in the Woodlawn neighborhood. He was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in good condition.

Police Supt. Garry McCarthy was set to speak Tuesday morning at the Union League Club, 65 W. Jackson Blvd., to address plans to tackle the spike in violence.

The plan is expected to involve a new overtime initiative for officers, in which they can work extra and longer shifts Thursday through Monday, and work on their days off.
