LaGrange Man Drowns In Wisconsin Triathlon

UPDATED 06/18/12 9:59 a.m.

SHERWOOD, Wis. (CBS)-- A 42-year-old La Grange man drowned this weekend in Wisconsin's Lake Winnebago, while performing in a triathlon.

As WBBM Newsradio's John Waelti reports, Doug Witmer was competing in the High Cliff Triathlon at the High Cliff State Park in Sherwood, Wis., when he drowned in Lake Winnebago.

It happened shortly before 8 a.m. Saturday. The sheriff's office says the triathlon organizer, Midwest Sports Events of De Pere, had volunteer lifeguards on site.

Kasey Madden has known the family for seven years.

"He was an avid cyclist, and a fun, wonderful, loving, smart guy, and it's a final blow," she said.

Witmer was married and had two children, a 6-year-old son and 10-year-old daughter, Madden told Newsradio WBBM.
