Police, Families Honor Fallen Officers For Father's Day

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Police officers and their families held a Father's Day memorial service on Sunday at a park dedicated to fallen officers.

WBBM Newsradio's John Waelti reports hundreds were on hand Sunday morning at Gold Star Families Memorial and Park, near Soldier Field, to pay their respects to police husbands and fathers who died in the line of duty.

Lora Morie was one of the family members taking part.

"My dad was on the force for many years, and [it's] really special to dedicate this day and this mass to the retired police, and the deceased police, and the police that were killed in action," she said.

Police Chaplain Dan Brandt has been leading Father's Day services at the park for the past four years.

"Having made the ultimate sacrifice, it's appropriate that we honor them every day, but certainly on this day," he said.

The annual event is organized by the Chicago Police Memorial Foundation, which provides education grants for children of officers who have been injured in the line of duty.
