14-Year-Old Boy Shot, Killed In Harvey

HARVEY, Ill. (STMW) -- A 14-year-old south suburban boy was killed late Saturday in what Harvey police are calling an accidental shooting.

Police responded to a call at 149th and Morgan Streets around 9 p.m., and the shooting occurred in the general area, Harvey spokeswoman Sandra Alvarado said.

The victim was identified as Mario Butler, of the 1600 block of Downs Drive in Calumet City, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office. He was pronounced dead at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn at 10:55 p.m.

Because the victim is a juvenile, few details are being released until after an investigation is completed, Alvarado said. The area does not have a history of violent gun activity, according to Alvarado.

The Harvey Police Department is working with the Cook County state's attorney's office to examine what police believe was an accidental shooting, Alvarado said.
