Giants OF Melky Cabrera Suspended 50 Games For PEDs

(CBS) Giants outfielder Melky Cabrera was suspended 50 games without pay Wednesday after testing positive for Testosterone.

The suspension effectively ends his regular season.

“My positive test was the result of my use of a substance I should not have used … I am deeply sorry for my mistake,” Cabrera said, according to MLB’s Twitter feed.

Cabrera was enjoying a resurgent season and was the MVP of this season’s MLB All Star Game. He was batting .346 with a .390 OBP, .516 SLG and .906 OPS. All four numbers are career highs.

The Giants are currently tied for first place in the National League West with the Los Angeles Dodgers.
