A 12-year-old boy from the western suburbs spent his afternoon dining at the White House on Monday. He was one of just 54 children invited to a very special luncheon, as First Lady Michelle Obama hosted the first ever kids state dinner.
The attendees were the winners of a healthy recipe contest. It’s part of the first lady’s “Let’s Move” campaign to fight childhood obesity. Not only did the kids have lunch at the White House, they got a surprise visit from the president.
Jonah Schaik of Hinsdale won a spot at the dinner with his pesto pasta recipe. You can find the recipe here.
Jonah said he entered the contest because “my mom gave me a recipe challenge to come up with a healthy pasta dish that my little brother with food allergies could eat.”
