CHICAGO (CBS) – A minivan struck and killed an 84-year-old woman as she crossed the street Monday evening near her home in the West Ridge neighborhood on the Far North Side.

The victim was standing between two parked cars, then walked into the 6200 block of North California Avenue about 6 p.m. and was struck by a 2007 Kia Sedona, police News Affairs Officer Jose Estrada said.

Ilchya Abraham of the 6700 block of North California Avenue was taken to Saint Francis Hospital in Evanston, where she was pronounced dead at 5:50 p.m., according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office.

The driver of the vehicle remained at the scene, Estrada said. Police were unsure Monday afternoon if the motorist would be charged or ticketed.

The Major Accident Investigation Unit is investigating.
