Two Dead, 10 Wounded In Weekend Gun Violence
CHICAGO (CBS) -- Two people were killed and 10 wounded in gun violence in the city since Friday night.
The most recent fatal shooting occurred in the 11600 block of South Wallace Street about 5:40 a.m. Saturday. Police responding to a call of shots fired found a vehicle had crashed into a porch. The driver of the car – an alleged gang member -- was dead at the scene with a gunshot wound to the chest, police said.
The Cook County Medical Examiner's office identified the driver as Mark Woodson, 36, of the 5000 block of Virginia Street in Gary, Ind.
A teenage boy also died on Saturday after he was critically wounded in a drive-by shooting on the Southwest Side.
Jesus Garcia, 17, was in the 2900 block of West 56th Street when shots were fired about 8:40 p.m., authorities said. Garcia, of the 5200 block of South Fairfield Avenue, was taken in critical condition to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County, where he died Saturday at 9:57 a.m., authorities said.
The shooting appeared to be gang-related, police said.
In the South Side Chatham neighborhood Friday night, a 19-year-old man was shot while standing with a group of people.
They were standing with a group of people in the 8200 block of South Maryland about 11:55 p.m. when a shooter ran toward them, firing shots, police said. The victim was shot once in the leg and taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn in "stable' condition, police said.
Two men were shot early Saturday in the South Side Englewood neighborhood.
A 33-year-old man was in the 6700 block of South Bishop Street when an unknown male approached on foot, shot him and fled southbound about 12:50 a.m., police News Affairs Amina Greer said.
A 49-year-old man, who was inside a home in the 1400 block of West Marquette Road, was also struck by the gunfire.
Both men were taken in good condition to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County with the 33-year-old shot in the thigh and the 49-year-old shot in the abdomen.
A woman was shot Saturday morning in the Northwest Side Avondale neighborhood.
The shooting occurred at 6:55 a.m. in the 2900 block of North Ridgeway Avenue, police said. The 30-year-old woman was taken in critical condition to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center with multiple gunshot wounds to the body.
At 5:47 p.m. Saturday, a 28-year-old man was shot in the back in the 4700 block of South Prairie Avenue, police said. He drove himself to the University of Chicago Hospital, where he was listed in good condition, police said.
On Saturday night, two men were listed in serious condition after they were wounded in seperate shootings in the Austin neighborhood on the West Side.
At 7:57 p.m., a man in his 30s was shot multiple times in the head and body in the 4900 block of West Huron Street, police said. The man was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital.
About 10 minutes later, a 32-year-old man was shot in the stomach during a robbery in the 300 block of North Central Avenue, police said. He was taken to Stroger Hospital.
A 43-year-old man was listed in good condition after he was shot in the upper right thigh in the 8200 block of South Coles Avenue about 8:40 p.m., police said.
About 1:35 a.m. Sunday, a 21-year-old man was shot in the leg in the 100 block of North Lockwood Avenue. He was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in good condition, according to police.
The most recent shooting happened about 11:50 p.m. Sunday when a 24-year-old man was shot in the left thigh as he stood in the 3000 block of West Roosevelt Road, police said. He was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in "stable" condition.
