BERWYN, Ill. (CBS) -- Police in west suburban Berwyn shot and killed a couple of pit bulls Thursday morning, after one of them went after a woman and her small dog.

WBBM Newsradio 's Bernie Tafoya reports, shortly after 7:30 a.m., a woman was walking her small dog near 27th Street and Ridgeland Avenue, when a pit bull escaped from its yard and went after the little dog.

The pit bull then ran back to its yard, where there was another pit bull. Police and neighbors said those particular pit bulls have been known to be vicious.

Neighbor Mary Noriega said there have been ongoing problems with both pit bulls on the block.

"Every time somebody goes by, they try to get out," she said. "Everybody has a chance when they raise their dogs to raise them the right way, but some people won't do that."

When both dogs ran out of the yard together later Thursday morning, police shot and killed both animals.

An officer also suffered a leg injury. It was not immediately clear if he was bitten by one of the dogs, or wounded by a bullet.

The owner of the pit bulls was not home at the time.
