14-Year-Old Boy Slain In Evanston

Updated 09/23/12 - 1:32 p.m.

EVANSTON, Ill. (CBS) -- A 14-year-old boy was shot and killed in Evanston late Saturday night.

Evanston police responded to a call of shots fired around 10:30 p.m. Saturday near Church Street and Dodge Avenue. When they arrived, they found 14-year-old Dajae Coleman had been shot and killed.

Sunday morning, investigators were focusing on a home at the intersection of Church and Florence Avenue – taking photos inside and outside the home, and searching the back yard and perimeter of the home with flashlights.

Police also have been searching in the back yard of an adjacent home.

Neighbors told CBS 2's Courtney Gousman they believe Dajae was shot in a drive-by near Florence and Church. Witnesses said he was walking with friends when he was shot.

Dajae was a freshman at Evanston Township High School. Grief counselors were at the school Sunday afternoon to provide support to his classmates.

"We know that some students will have a very difficult time dealing with this news," District 202 Supt. Eric Witherspoon said in an email to students and parents.

Grief counselors will also be available at the school on Monday.

"Our sympathy and thoughts are with Dajae's family," Witherspoon said.
