Mom Charged In False Amber Alert, Abandoning Baby

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Officials in Stark County, Illinois have charged the mother of a 3-week-old in the child's disappearance yesterday, that caused an Amber Alert.

Stark County Sheriff Jimmie Dison says it was under questioning from the FBI and Illinois State Police that 19-year-old Kendra Meaker confessed.

"She did take the baby to a rural country road and deposited her along the side of the road," Dyson said.

Earlier in the day, Meaker had told the authorities that her child, three-week-old, Mia Graci Thompson, was missing from the back seat of her car.

Dyson said that Meaker twice told him that she did nothing to harm the girl.

"That's where the obstruction of justice charge comes in," Dyson said.

The child was found on the side of the road by volunteers during a community-wide search. The child is reported to be doing fine at a local hospital.

Meaker also faces a charge of child endangerment. Bond was set at $100,000
