State Reports Six Deaths From West Nile In 2012

CHICAGO (CBS) -- The state health department says six people have now died of West Nile Virus this year.

The agency says 179 people have contracted the disease.

That compares to only 34 cases in all of last year, resulting in three deaths.

The experts say this year's mild winter, early spring and very hot summer created excellent breeding conditions for the mosquito that carries West Nile.
