Dog Missing For 5 Years To Be Reunited With Ga. Owner Here

CRYSTAL LAKE, Ill. (STMW) — A Siberian husky missing from its home in Georgia for almost five years will be reunited with her owner Saturday after being saved from euthanization by a northwest suburban animal rescue group.

Shakira, a 6-year-old husky, was reported lost or stolen in December 2007 by her owner, who lives in Chatsworth, Ga., a statement from McHenry County Sheriff Keith Nygren said.

Shakira was going to be euthanized at a shelter in Georgia, but instead was shipped on Aug. 11 to a husky rescue group based in Harvard, the statement said.

Employees of Free Spirit Siberian Husky Rescue discovered that Shakira had a microchip implanted, the statement said, and a microchip service, Home Again Pet ID, helped identify the dog.

That service on Wednesday called the dog’s owner, Heather Jackson, who contacted McHenry County authorities on Friday, the statement said.

Shakira is currently being housed at McHenry County Animal Control in Crystal Lake, where she will be reunited Jackson on Saturday.
