CHICAGO (STMW) – It’s already proving to be a violent weekend in Chicago. As of Saturday morning, two people had been killed, and five others had been injured in shootings since Friday evening.

CBS 2′s Courtney Gousman reports there were also two police-involved shootings overnight.

A man was shot by officers in the Chicago Lawn neighborhood near 67th Street and Artesian Avenue, after he allegedly pointed a gun at them, during a foot chase.

Police said the officers were investigating a string of robberies.

Across town, in the Uptown neighborhood, several bullets hit a police cruiser early Saturday near Sunnyside Avenue and Broadway.

Police said officers saw three men walking down the street, and recognized one of them as a man wanted for questioning, so they attempted to stop him, but the men took off running.

One of the three men turned and fired at the officers, who fired back. No one was injured in that shooting. One person was taken into custody.

Of the fatal shootings, both happened late Friday.

Police said a 34-year-old man from Evergreen Park was killed in a drive-by in the Englewood neighborhood around 11:30 p.m.

Lafayette Johnson, of the 2600 block of West 89th Place in Evergreen Park, was pronounced dead at the scene at 11:36 p.m.

In the South Shore neighborhood, 73-year-old William Thomas was shot and killed while sitting on a porch in the 6800 block of South East End Avenue.

Police said detectives do not believe he was the intended target.

Thomas’ niece, Ursula Woodall Berry-Hill said, “the gun violence has to stop. It has to be something that we all can do together, and with the help of all the people around, and the wards, and things of that nature, and all of these cops doing a great job, and you guys casting it, maybe we can have a resolution.”

A $1,000 reward is being offered for information leading to Thomas’ killer.

Saturday afternoon, Mayor Rahm Emanuel and Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle will discuss a collaborative effort to reduce violence while strengthening communities.
