5 Dead, 24 Wounded In Weekend Shootings

CHICAGO (CBS)-- Five people were killed--including a teenager--and at least 24 people were wounded in separate shootings since Friday night.
The most recent fatality happened early Sunday in the South Side Washington Park neighborhood when an 18-year-old man was fatally shot in the chest at 4:20 a.m. in the 5300 block of South Calumet Avenue, police said. He was attending a party at an apartment when shots were fired and partygoers fled out the back door. The victim was found unresponsive on the kitchen floor.
Jamiere Brown, of the 7300 block of South St. Lawrence Avenue was pronounced dead at John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County at 5:10 a.m., according to Cook County Medical Examiner's office.
Another fatality occurred when two teenage boys were shot Saturday night in the Woodlawn neighborhood, police said.
The boys--ages 16 and 18--were hanging out in the front yard of a building in the 6300 block of South St. Lawrence Avenue when shots were fired about 9:20 p.m., authorities said.
The youngest boy was shot in the upper chest and taken in "extremely critical" condition to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of County, said Fire Media Affairs Director Larry Langford.
The boy – identified as Richard Modell, 16, of the 6500 block of South Rhodes Avenue – was pronounced dead at 10:12 p.m., according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.
The other boy was shot multiple times and taken in serious condition to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, Langford said. According to unconfirmed dispatch reports, the boy was shot four times in the legs and the scrotum.
A 20-year-old woman was fatally shot during a domestic dispute Saturday morning in the Cragin neighborhood on the city's Northwest Side, police said.
Nawal Aysheh was at her home in the 4800 block of West Wolfram Street when she was shot about 9:10 a.m., authorities said. Paramedics took her in "extremely critical" condition to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, where she died at 11:45 a.m., authorities said.
About 11:30 p.m. on Friday, a man from southwest suburban Evergreen Park was killed in a drive-by shooting in the Englewood neighborhood, police said.
Lafayette Johnson, 34, was walking in the 7100 block of South Eggleston Avenue when a dark-colored vehicle passed by and shots were fired, authorities said. Officers found Johnson dead with a gunshot wound to the back, police said.
About 7:15 p.m. on Friday, a 73-year-old man was shot dead while he sat on a porch in the South Chicago neighborhood, police said.
A stray bullet hit William Thomas in the head while he sat on the porch in the 6800 block of South East End Avenue, authorities said. Thomas, of the 1700 block of East 68th Street, was pronounced dead at the scene.
A total of 24 people were hurt in shootings throughout the city since Friday afternoon. Nine of those wounded were shot in a bloody two-hour stretch between 12:30 a.m. and 5:30 a.m. early Sunday.
The wounded include two men who shot each other in a gang-related Rogers Park attack, police said. The 25-year-old gunman walked up to a van in the 1400 block of West Morse Avenue about 12:30 a.m. and shot two people inside, one of whom returned fire.
They were both hospitalized in police custody, and the original shooter remains in serious condition at Saint Francis Hospital in Evanston with gunshot wounds to the face and neck.
A male, whose age was not immediately known, was shot by two males after his home was burglarized in the 0-100 block of West 112th Street at 5:30 a.m. in the most recent shooting. He was hospitalized at an area hospital in an unidentified condition.
