CHICAGO (CBS)– A Cook County jury awarded $850,000 to a man who was struck by a city garbage truck two years ago in the Northwest Side Albany Park neighborhood.
Oseas Pineda, of Chicago, was legally crossing the street at West Lawrence Avenue and North Pulaski Road August 21, 2009, when a city garbage truck turning right struck him, according to a release from his attorney’s firm.
Pineda fell underneath the 50,000-pound truck’s front axle and the rear tandem wheels, the release said. He was able to pull himself from under the truck once it stopped.
Pineda underwent surgery and a skin graft after suffering a crushed foot, including six broken bones, the release said. He continues to suffer permanent injuries.
The jury awarded Pineda $850,000 in damages, which was reduced by his partial responsibility.
A spokesperson for the city’s Law Department was unavailable for comment.
