He's The 'Milk Dud' No More: Oberweis Wins State Senate Seat

CHICAGO (CBS) -- After five failed campaigns, Jim Oberweis has finally won elective office.

Over the past ten years, dairy magnate and Republican Jim Oberweis has aspired to the U.S. Senate, the governor's mansion and Congress.

Despite spending millions from his personal fortune, he lost each race, a record that earned him the nickname, "the Milk Dud."

But, now he's been elected to the Illinois state Senate seat from the 25th District.

Given the other results, he says his victory is bittersweet.

"Unfortunately, the rest of state has made things pretty difficult on Republicans," he said.

Oberweis won't say how much of his own money he's spent on his repeated campaigns.

"More than I intended to spend, I will say that," he said.

Some estimates put it at more than $10 million.
