New Citizens Sworn In At City Hall
CHICAGO (CBS)— For only the second time in the City Council Chambers, Mayor Emanuel witnessed the citizenship oaths of people from 26 different countries, and then welcomed them. He recalled his own background as the son of immigrant.
The diverse group of people who pledged their allegiance in the City Council Chambers are from Syria, Ecuador and India to Jamaica, Poland and Mexico. Mayor Emanuel told them they represent the story of America.
The Mayor praised Congressman Luis Gutierrez as the nation’s premier champion of immigration reform and the Congressman agreed, it’s his mission. Gutierrez says what drives him every day is the quest for justice for immigrants.
He and the Mayor agree the goal is much closer now.
