Kirk Herbstreit Rips NIU’s BCS Bowl Berth

(WSCR) Not everyone is thrilled with Northern Illinois surprise BCS Bowl berth.

On ESPN’s BCS selection special Sunday night, analyst Kirk Herbstreit ripped apart NIU’s Orange Bowl appearance, calling it a “joke” and saying this is a “sad state for college football.”

The Huskies (12-1) are fresh of their second consecutive MAC Championship, but with a loss to Iowa, their resume just isn’t good enough, according to Herbstreit.

“I love MAC football, but to put them in the BCS is an absolute joke to the rest of those teams that are more deserving,” Herbstreit said. “I can’t believe we’re even having this discussion.”

“They don’t deserve to be in the BCS this year. Are you kidding me with Northern Illinois playing in the BCS? Northern Illinois, no one knew they were playing until the Toledo game a few weeks ago…  You’re going to leave Oklahoma out to put Northern Illinois into a BCS bowl game? Are you kidding me?”
