CHICAGO (CBS) – Church and school bells tolled throughout the state on Friday, as part of a day of mourning for the victims of the shooting massacre last week in Connecticut.

WBBM Newsradio’s Mike Krauser reports the bells of Holy Name Cathedral tolled 26 times, over a span of 4 minutes and 26 seconds at 8:30 a.m., one ring for each of the 20 children and 6 adults killed at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., one week ago.

Gov. Pat Quinn has declared Friday a day of mourning in Illinois, and asked that residents observe a moment of silence at 8:30 a.m. local time – the time of the shootings in Connecticut – to remember the victims.

WBBM Newsradio’s John Cody reports Connecticut Gov. Dan Malloy had asked fellow governors for a minute of silence across the nation at the time of the shooting exactly one week ago in Newtown, Conn.

Quinn asked every Illinois resident to reflect upon what is truly important in life. He also suggested every available bell at schools and churches be rung once for each of the victims of the Newtown shootings.

In Indiana, Gov. Mitch Daniels also heeded Connecticut’s call, proclaiming a moment of silence at 9:30 a.m. Eastern Time to mark the loss of life in Newtown.
