CHICAGO (STMW) — The gifts are unwrapped, and soon the pine needles will starting to fall to the floor, meaning it’s almost time to plan for the removal of your Christmas tree.

The Chicago Park District announced Wednesday that beginning Saturday, Jan. 5, and continuing through Friday, Jan. 18, residents can take their Christmas trees, real ones, to about two dozen locations at city parks to be chipped and turned to mulch.

The mulch will be available for free to residents on a limited basis at the tree recycling locations beginning Jan. 11, according to the Park District.

Before dropping off your tree, remove all ornaments, lights and stands first as sites are not able to accept other materials, such as decorations, wreaths, garland or household recyclables.
