Doctor Charged With Filing $3.5M In False Claims

CHICAGO (CBS) -- A doctor who practices in Chicago and Northwest Indiana has been charged with filing phony medical claims.

WBBM Newsradio's Bernie Tafoya reports federal fraud charges have been leveled against Paul Madison, 59, who runs a practice at the Water Tower SurgiCenter on Michigan Avenue, and another in Michigan City, Ind.

According to federal prosecutors, Madison has been charged with submitting more than $3.5 million in fake medical claims to private insurance companies and federal programs.

Doctor Allegedly Filed Phony Claims

His 67-year-old nurse, Jeanette Shin, also has been accused of filing false medical reports.

The indictment accuses Madison of ordering his staff to submit false claims for chiropractic manipulation under anesthesia; treatments which were not actually performed.

Federal prosecutors were seeking forfeiture of more than $783,000. If Madison doesn't have the money, they seek the seizure of his assets, including a Rolls Royce Corniche.
