2 Dead, 8 Wounded Since Friday Night

CHICAGO (STMW) --A 19-year-old man was shot dead in an alley on the Far South Side and another man was shot dead on the South Side during a weekend of violence that wounded eight other people, authorities said.

The most recent murder occurred about 5:10 p.m. Sunday near 51st Street and Indiana Avenue in the Washington Park neighborhood, police said. That's where a 28-year-old man was gunned down, authorities said, adding that his name was being withheld as officials notify his family.

Police officers arrived at the scene of the shooting just in time to see two suspects taking off in a car, police said. The officers followed the car onto the Dan Ryan Expressway, where the car crash, police said, adding that two suspects were later taken into custody near 43rd Street and Indiana Avenue.

About 11:30 a.m. on Sunday, Devante Watts, 19, was found dead with a gunshot wound to the head in an alley in the 500 block of East 109th Street about 11:30 a.m., authorities said. The Cook County medical examiner's office said Watts lived in the 10700 block of South Langley Avenue, which is not far from the alley where his body was found.

Among the eight people injured during the holiday weekend was a 40-year-old pizza deliveryman who was stabbed five times during an apparent robbery, police said. The attack happened as the man made a delivery in the 8500 block of South Green Bay Avenue in the South Chicago neighborhood about 8 p.m. on Friday, police said.

The man made a call to a customer as he arrived at a home, police said, and was shortly after stabbed in a gangway by someone who took the man's cash and food. The deliveryman was listed in serious condition at South Shore Hospital, police said.

Two teenage boys were also wounded in separate attacks this weekend.

A 16-yer-old boy was shot in the neck while he rode in a car Friday night on the South Side, police said. The boy was in a car traveling in the 200 block of East 51st Street when he was shot about 11 p.m., police said, adding that the boy was listed in serious condition at John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County.

Another 16-year-old boy was wounded during an apparent drive-by shooting on the Southwest Side early Sunday, police said. The boy had just left a home in the 4700 block of South Karlov Avenue when a dark colored sports-utility vehicle drove by and shots were fired about 3:45 a.m., police said. The boy was shot in the leg and was later treated and released from Mount Sinai Hospital, police said.

Authorities said they do not believe the boy was the intended target and that he was at the wrong place at the wrong time.
