Several Injured In Expressway Crashes Early Tuesday

CHICAGO (STMW) -- Seven people were injured during crashes on I-90 early Tuesday -- just one of several accidents that police said occurred on Chicago-area expressways in the early hours of the new year.

The seven people were injured in a two-vehicle crash on the Dan Ryan Expressway near Roosevelt Road about 2:30 a.m., said a sergeant for the Illinois State Police.

Four people were listed in critical condition, two were listed in "stable" but serious condition and one person only suffered minor injuries, according to Fire Media Affairs. Some of the victims were taken to Rush University Medical Center, State Police said.

Alcohol was likely a factor in the crash, State Police said.

A man driving the vehicle that caused the collision tried to flee the scene, but was arrested a short distance away by police stationed at the University of Illinois at Chicago, State Police said.

Two other collisions occurred on expressways early Tuesday.

At least one person suffered minor injuries in a rollover collision on the Kennedy Expressway near Division Street about 2:40 a.m., State Police said. At least one person was transported to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County, with minor injuries, and troopers were still collecting details at the scene early Tuesday, State Police said.

No one was seriously in a second rollover collision that occurred about 1:50 a.m. on I-94 near West 147th Street, State Police said. It was unclear how many people may have been in involved in the crash or which hospitals -- if any -- they were taken to, State Police said.

Further details were not immediately available.
