2 In Custody After Officer Nearly Run Over On South Side

(STMW) -- Two people are in police custody Thursday after a driver tried to run over a police officer on the South Side and shots were fired at the vehicle by officers, police said.

About 11:10 a.m., officers made a traffic stop near 75th and State streets, police News Affairs Officer Jose Estrada said. The driver of the vehicle hit one of the officers with the vehicle, he said. The officer was not seriously injured.

One of the officers on the scene fired shots at the vehicle as it took off, but no one was hit by the gunfire, Estrada said. After a brief pursuit, the vehicle was again stopped near 78th and King Drive, and as of about 3 p.m., two people were being questioned by police.
