Motorist Killed In Head-On Crash In NW Suburbs

MARENGO TWP.(STMW) -- A 63-year-old man was killed Friday morning when the car he was driving was struck head-on in the northwest suburbs by a larger car being driven by an 86-year-old man.

At about 6 a.m. a 2012 Lincoln MKZ was westbound in the 22900 block of U.S. 20, just east of Johnson Road in unincorporated Marengo Township, when it entered the eastbound lane and struck a 1998 Honda sedan head-on, a release from the McHenry County Sheriff's office said.

The driver of the Honda, 63-year-old Stephan A. Ford of Garden Prairie, near Rockford, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the Lincoln, 86-year-old Roderick Mann of Lincolnshire, was taken to Centegra Hospital Woodstock by Marengo Fire Protection District paramedics and treated for what appeared to be non-life threatening injuries, the release said.

The Lincoln's air bags deployed and Mann was wearing his seatbelt, police said. Ford was not wearing a seatbelt and the Honda did not have airbags.

Personnel from the sheriff's office, Marengo police and Fire Protection District responded. The sheriff's Traffic Crash Investigation Unit and McHenry County Coroner's office are investigating.
