Around The NFL: RG3′s Injury, Chris Clemons Injured, FedEx Field Conditions Scrutinized

By Danny Cox

Sunday’s playoff game between the Washington Redskins and Seattle Seahawks really brought about a lot of excitement and a lot of trouble. The game itself was a good one that ended up turning into a blowout. As for the repercussions coming from the game, they may have taken center stage over the final result.

RG3 has partial tear in LCL and likely partial tear in ACL

The performance put on by Robert Griffin III on Sunday was one that many may consider courageous, but others may call it foolish. Staying in the game after getting obviously injured, RG3 suffered a partially torn lateral collateral ligament (LCL) in his right knee and likely tore at least part of his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) as well.

This does not bode well for the popular Redskins’ rookie, as he had a previous knee injury suffered back at Baylor in 2009. Doctors couldn’t tell just how serious the injury was after an MRI and don’t yet know what surgery will need to be performed.

Some reports say that RG3 could be out, with rehab, anywhere from nine to 12 months. That right there would make his status for the 2013 season up in the air. The Redskins are doing anything they can to determine how bad his injury is and will take all precautions from this point on.

Seattle‘s Chris Clemons tears ACL and meniscus

The Seattle Seahawks have advanced to the Divisional Round of the playoffs, but they’ll have to move on without defensive end Chris Clemons. The veteran suffered a torn ACL and torn meniscus in his left knee during the 24-14 victory over the Redskins.

In the third quarter, Clemons got his cleat stuck in the messed up turf at FedEx Field – more on that later – and that is when it appears his injury occurred. The team was instantly concerned that the injury would be rather severe. An MRI done on Monday confirmed their fears.

The loss of Clemons will be a big loss for the Seahawks as he has been their biggest pass rusher since heading to the team in 2010. During the 2012 season, Clemons racked up 11.5 sacks, and that type of pressure will definitely be missed as the team travels to Atlanta to face the Falcons.

FedEx Field comes under immense scrutiny for “horrible” conditions

Seattle Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll says that the field of the Washington Redskins is just “horrible.” Redskins coach Mike Shanahan doesn’t think it is that bad, but he does agree that it could be better.

“You’d like a perfect field, and it wasn’t a perfect field, we all know that,” Redskins coach Shanahan said.

Both RG3 and Clemons’ injuries came as a result of rough play and the dirty, awful conditions of FedEx Field. The field was overly dry which made it hard to move around on and made it feel like concrete.

Lots of extra events including college football games and music concerts have taken its toll on the field, and something will definitely need to be done before next season. While the field did meet the NFL’s requirements for putting a game on, that doesn’t mean that it was totally up to par for the intensity of a professional game.
