Woman Sexually Assaulted, Husband Robbed In South Loop

Updated 01/10/13 - 12:06 p.m.

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Neighbors in the South Loop were stunned after a gunman attacked a woman in her driveway Wednesday night, then robbed her husband inside their home in a generally quiet subdivision.

WBBM Newsradio's Regine Schlesinger reports, around 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, a man with a gun sexually assaulted a 56-year-old woman in her car, in the driveway outside her home, in the 1400 block of South Clark Street.

The attacker took the woman's house keys, and then robbed her husband inside the home.

The woman was hospitalized in stable condition.

Anuj, who lives nearby, said it's not an area that's used to violence.

"It's all families here, you know?" he said. "There's not a lot of young people here. It's all families with kids, or people who've lived here for 20 years. These are 20-year-old units, so it is a little scary."

The Dearborn Park II subdivision is surrounded by locked gates, and accessible only from one side. That had given residents a sense of security that has been shaken by the attack.

"I don't feel safe anymore. My kids are not safe anymore here," said a young doctor and mother who lives near the victim. She left for work Thursday morning shaken by the attack.

She said, from now on, she'll watch her kids more closely. She said she used to let them walk around the neighborhood alone, but not anymore.

"Not without someone else, not alone," she said.

Anuj said his wife will be more careful after the attack.

"You know, she has the garage open when she loads the kids into the car, and I think she's going to be a little more careful now, keeping an eye out for strange behavior," he said.

Police have a vague description of the attacker, but haven't found him yet.
