Niles Salon Is Latest To Be Robbed By Serial Bandit

NILES, Ill. (CBS) – A gunman who has robbed several suburban hair salons has struck again – this time in Niles.

An armed suspect entered the Hair Cuttery in the 8300 block of Golf Road around 11:30 a.m. Monday. He displayed a handgun and demanded the cash from the register, Niles police said in a news release.

An employee handed over cash, and the offender walked out of the store. No employees were harmed.

"Safety first, so (we) gave him the money, and it was really one, two, three and out," Socorro Cepeda, Hair Cuttery district leader, told CBS 2's Dana Kozlov.

Niles Police Sgt. Robert Tornobene says the offender got away with around $450.

The Niles robbery follows a pattern of hair-salon robberies that have occurred in Chicago, Skokie, Morton Grove, Bensenville, Lombard and Glen Ellyn.  Hair Cuttery locations were among those hit in the past month.

"The MO's very similar," Tornobene says.

The offender from the Niles robbery is described as a male in his mid-30s who wore dark sunglasses and a hood covering his head.

There was no surveillance video, say police. They released screen grabs from a previous robbery in Skokie.

Anyone who may have information regarding this incident is urged to call the Niles Police Department Investigations Unit at (847) 588-6500.
