Durbin Calls For Crackdown On For-Profit Colleges

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Senator Dick Durbin says he's renewing his efforts on Capitol Hill to crack down on abuses by some for-profit colleges.

Durbin Calls For Crackdown On For-Profit Colleges

Senator Durbin says for-profit colleges like the University Phoenix, DeVry and Kaplan account for a quarter of all federal aid to education and about half of the defaults on student short term loans.

"These are all for-profit operations and most of them have terrible track records," said Durbin. "They lure young people into their ranks, charge them more tuition than they should be charging them then they should be charged and dump them as soon as they start failing a course."

Durbin is sponsoring legislation to realistically accredit such schools and reduce predatory lending.

Dick Durbin is the guest on this week's "At Issue" at 9:30 a.m. and 9:30 p.m. Sunday on WBBM Newsradio 780 and 105.9 FM.
