Rep. Schock Blames Media Over Recent Flap

SPRINGFIELD (CBS) -- U. S. Rep. Aaron Schock (R-Peoria) blames overzealous headline writers for a recent flap over his urging some Illinois gubernatorial hopefuls to bow out. Dave Dahl reports.

He says he has not determined his political plans for next year, but U.S. Rep. Aaron Schock (R-Peoria) is blaming overzealous headline writers for making recent remarks in Chicago appear he was calling on other Republicans to drop out of the gubernatorial race.

"The newspaper reporter said, 'do you think people who lost elections should continue to run?'" Schock says, "and I said, 'Well, I can't tell anybody not to run, but to me, that's the definition of insanity: you keep doing the same things and expect different results.'"

The 2014 campaign could include at least two of 2010's failed candidates, State Sens. Bill Brady (R-Bloomington) and Kirk Dillard (R-Hinsdale).

Schock refuses to blame chairman Pat Brady for the state party's woes, saying a combination of a popular president and an unfavorable remap was a bad one for Illinois Republicans. Brady is taking heat for coming out in favor of same-sex marriage.

Schock, who cites his "upbringing" as a reason to oppose gay marriage but chose not to elaborate, says the state and nation have bigger problems than to make same-sex marriage a litmus test in 2014.
