CHICAGO (CBS) — Two firefighters were hospitalized after responding to a house fire on the South Side early Tuesday.

One firefighter experienced shortness of breath. Another firefighter suffered an ankle injury. Both were being treated at the University of Chicago hospital.

The fire broke out at a two-story building in the 7000 block of South Rhodes Avenue and spread to a home next door. Five adults and one child in the second building were able to escape the fire safely on their own.

The Red Cross was helping people displaced by the fire.
