Double Amputee Olympian Oscar Pistorius Arrested For Murder

(CBS) Paralympic champion Oscar Pistorius has been charged with murder after a woman was fatally shot in his home in South Africa.

Police spokesperson Brigadier Denise Beukes said there are no other suspects at this time.

Pistorius made sporting history by becoming the first double amputee sprinter to compete in the Olympics. He competed for South Africa in the 2012 Summer Olympics in London.

While details of the case are still unknown, South African police officials say they plan to protest Pistorius' expected application for bail in a court hearing scheduled for Friday.

"There are witnesses and they have been interviewed this morning. We are talking about neighbors and people that heard things earlier in the evening and when the shooting took place," Beukes said.

In South Africa, police typically do not release the names of victims, but other media outlets have reported the woman shot was Reeva Steenkamp, Pistorius' girlfriend.
