Ed's Driveway: BMW 650i Gran Coupe

(CBS) -- The auto show is over and maybe you've been thinking about buying a new car. This week we test drive a car most of us would love to have, if we didn't have to get a second mortgage to afford it. You'll find beauty, luxury and power in the BMW 650i.

The BMW 650i Gran Coupe is the best of both worlds.

A luxury sedan that'll take you on a comfortable touring drive.

A thrilling rocket that takes you from 0-60 in a bit over four seconds with the outstanding handling you'd expect from a 6-series BMW.

The handling is enhanced by technology to make your drive safer, with features like adaptive cruise control, heads up display and blind spot warnings. The lane departure feature vibrates your steering wheel. You'd swear you hit rumble strips on the edge of the lane road. Look how the backup camera hides away.

Driven by a twin turbo, v-8 power plant that brings 445 horsepower. This 4,400 pound car accelerates smoothly and gets an mpg of 17 city and 25 highway. A special feature that shuts off the engine when stopped, like a hybrid, enhances fuel economy. I didn't like it. It's easily turned off.

The exterior of the 650i Gran Coupe I drove was a satin finish called frozen bronze metallic. A matte finish is a matter of taste. You either love it or you don't.

The interior of the 650i is absolutely stunning, white & brown leather. The stitching and design of leather and wood is some of the finest work I've seen in a car.

We brought the car to the unique Willow Hill Golf Course in Northbrook. Like golf, this car is best enjoyed after winter's snow melts.

Our well-equipped version of the 650i Gran Coupe had a sticker price close to $120,000.

If you're in the market for an Audi s7, or a Mercedes CLS, you have to take the BMW 650i for a test drive.
