Bears Place Franchise Tag On Melton

(CBS) The Bears have used their franchise tag on defensive tackle Henry Melton, the team announced Friday night.

"Henry has been a good player for us and we are using the franchise tag so his development continues as a Bear," Bears general manager Phil Emery said. "We will continue our conversations with Henry and work toward a multi-year agreement."

The franchise tag for defensive tackles is $8.45 million in 2013, according to a report from the NFL Network.

The Bears and Melton have until July 15 to agree on a long-term extension.

Melton, 26, is entering his fourth season with the Bears after being selected in the fourth round of the 2009 NFL Draft.
