1 Killed, 7 Hurt In Weekend Shootings

CHICAGO (STMW) -- Two men were critically injured by stab wounds and five people were shot Sunday morning in five separate incidents.

The two men who were stabbed had been walking in the 1500 block of West Western Avenue at 5:07 a.m. when a group of people approached them and an altercation ensued, police News Affairs Officer John Mirabelli said.

After the group fled, the men, ages 26 and 27, noticed stab wounds and lacerations to their abdomens, Mirabelli said.

Both men were taken in serious condition to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County.

Police are searching for one person who had a weapon, Mirabelli said.

Also on Sunday, a male was wounded during a drive-by shooting at 1:02 p.m. at a gas station in the 7900 block of South Damen Avenue in the South Side Auburn Gresham neighborhood, police said. The male was taken in "stable" condition to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn with a gunshot wound to the buttocks. The shooting was gang related, police said.

On Sunday, a 35-year-old man was shot in the 4900 block of South Throop Street, in the Back of the Yards neighborhood, about 6:30 a.m. The 35-year-old man was taken in good condition to St. Bernard Hospital and Health Care Center with a gunshot wound to the hand, police said.

Earlier Sunday in the same neighborhood, a 19-year-old man was shot while driving a vehicle in the 4500 block of South Paulina Street, about 4:55 a.m. when another vehicle pulled alongside and opened fire, police said. The man was shot in the upper arm and drove himself to a fire station in the 4400 block of South Ashland Avenue where he was treated before being taken to Stroger Hospital in good condition. The shooting was gang-related, police said.

About an hour earlier, a 44-year-old man was shot in the 7000 block of South Morgan Street, in the South Side Englewood neighborhood, police said. While attempting to intervene in an altercation between two males, one of the males produced a gun and fired at the victim before fleeing. He was taken in "stable" condition to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn with a gunshot wound to the upper right leg.

In the West Ridge neighborhood on the Far North Side, a 21-year-old woman was shot in the neck about 12:15 a.m., police said.

The woman was sitting in the passenger side of a vehicle when an unknown male approached and opened fire, authorities said. After she was shot, the woman ran to the intersection of North Western and West Devon avenues where she was later found by police.

She was taken to St. Francis Hospital in Evanston and is in "stable" condition, police said.

On Saturday, an elderly man was shot and killed leaving his Far South Side home for a dialysis appointment was one of four people shot this weekend in Chicago.

William Strickland, 72, was headed to a Pace paratransit van when two men tried to rob him early Saturday. They shot him several times in a gangway outside his home in the 400 block of East 95th Street, authorities said.

Strickland was headed to one of his three weekly dialysis appointments when he was shot, the Sun-Times reported. He died at 4 a.m., just steps from his home.
