Kane County Coroner Has Unclaimed Cremains Of 47 People

(CBS) – The Kane County coroner has an unusual request: Please come and pick up the cremated remains of your loved one.

Rob Russell's office has 47 unclaimed cremains dating back to 1952. Some were found in storage lockers, and one was even donated to Goodwill in a Gold Medal flour tin.

The coroner's office has a list of the identities of the deceased. Relatives will be expected to prove they are next of kin and fill out paperwork.

If no one steps forward for all or some of the cremains, Russell says his office will work to find a final resting place, possibly at a former pauper's cemetery in Kane County.
