SCHAUMBURG, Ill. (CBS) — After 32 years, He’s out of a job. Brian Howerton — the embattled police chief in Schaumburg — announced his retirement today. CBS 2′s Pam Zekman investigated Howerton last fall.

A source says Howerton was told to retire or be fired and he chose to leave on his own.

The surprise announcement follows a combination of embarrassing events from police officers accused of dealing drugs to their police chief accused of harassing his former girlfriend.

In a press release the village manager thanked Howerton for his years of service. Meanwhile an outside consultant has been hired to help search for a new chief and review department procedures.

The results of their internal investigation into the stalking complaint could be released soon.
