Chris Collins Named NU Head Coach

(CBS) -- Northwestern has officially announced Duke assistant Chris Collins as its next head basketball coach, according to a team release.

Collins is a Northbrook native and the son of former Bulls and current 76ers head coach Doug Collins.

"He has a tremendous pedigree as a basketball coach and will be an outstanding leader for Chicago's Big Ten Team, and mentor for our student-athletes," said Northwestern Athletic Director Jim Phillips.

"Northwestern University is a special place that strives for excellence in every regard, and our program will be no different," said Collins.

Collins has served at his alma mater as an assistant to Mike Krzyzewsk since 2000. He won Illinois' Mr. Basketball Award as a senior at Glenbrook North High School.
