Family Of Man Shot And Killed By Chicago Cops Files Lawsuit

HAZEL CREST, Ill. (CBS) — The family of a suburban man shot in the back and killed by Chicago Police officers has filed a lawsuit against the police and is looking for answers.

Chicago Police detectives were conducting surveillance in East Hazel Crest when they approached Ryan Rogers and his girlfriend as they got into a car in the 1900 block of West 171st Street.

Rogers was shot according to Chicago Police after he accelerated toward an officer. His girlfriend didn’t know they were officers.

The lawyer representing the Rogers family, Greg Kulis, says they want answers.

“I don’t know if they were watching him and it was some mistake and they thought he was someone else, I don’t know and that is one of the reasons the family has filed this lawsuit so promptly because the police department hasn’t really said much,” said Kulis.

The Hazel Crest Police Department says it was notified a week-and-a-half before the incident that Chicago Police was conducting surveillance.
