Burned Pregnant Pit Bull Recovering After Rescue In Monee

MONEE, Ill. (CBS) -- A pregnant pit bull found badly burned in the south suburbs on Thursday was expected to recover from her injuries, after a local rescue group stepped in to make sure of that.

WBBM Newsradio's Mike Krauser reports the dog was found on the side of the road near Monee. She'd been lit on fire, and might have been hit by a car, according to Debbie Wilke, founder of It's A Pittie Rescue.

"She's burned extensively. I believe the vet said 20 to 25 percent of her body," she said. "I wish I could say this was a one-in-a-time thing, but I actually have a foster right now, who was also burnt."

The dog was taken to a shelter, which notified Wilke. She's now being treated by Wilke's veterinarian in Monee. She's about to have a litter of puppies.

"It's just a lack of care for a life," she said. "I don't know what else you can call it, I really don't. I don't get it."

Wilke said the dog was on the mend on Friday.

"It's a miracle. She's doing really well," she said.

They're considering naming her Petunia or Phoenix, and they'd gladly take donations to help care for her and the puppies.
