Scarlet Tanager Spotted Early In Lincoln Park

CHICAGO (CBS) -- An early bird sighting in Lincoln Park.

It's at least a week early. But there it was in Lincoln Park. A scarlet tanager.

"It is the first one I've seen this season. From what I've seen online on eBird, no one else has seen a scarlet tanager in Lincoln Park yet so far this year."

Mason Fidino is the coordinator of wildlife management at the Lincoln Park Zoo.

Even last year when it was warm so early, he didn't spot a scarlet tanager this early.

Fidino says if tanagers arrive too early, there's not enough food. Too late, and the good territory is all gone.

"And so sometimes the early bird gets the worm, but if you go too early, it's going to be a bit of a problem. So this could be just a really brave tanager."

Fidino took his photo near a zoo parking lot.
