HOBART, Ind. (STMW) – A Hobart man was killed when he hit a tree while fleeing police early Sunday morning.

The Lake County Coroner’s Office said Christopher Velasquez, 18, suffered blunt force trauma injuries in the crash, which occurred around 3:30 a.m. at 3rd Street and Crestwood Drive according to the Lake County Coroner’s Office. Velasquez was pronounced dead at the scene.

Lake County Sheriff’s Department spokesperson Patti Van Til said that a Hobart police officer had stopped Velasquez’s car at Wisconsin and Cleveland streets, but Velasquez fled and crashed into a tree.

The crash occurred less than three miles from Velasquez’s home. It is unclear why Velasquez was stopped by police.

The Lake County Sheriff’s Department is investigating the crash.
